What a Good DFM Review Looks Like — and the Red Flags

A design-for-manufacture review should change your drawing. If it comes back as a price and nothing else, you did not get one.

Most machining suppliers offer a DFM review. The quality varies enormously, and the difference shows up in your unit cost and your first article results.

What a real DFM review contains

Feature-level observations, not general advice. "Pocket corner radius R1 requires a small cutter with several passes; R3 would let us use a larger tool and reduce cycle time" is useful. "Consider increasing radii" is not.

Alternatives with consequences attached. A good review gives you the option and the trade-off, so you can decide. It does not silently change your design.

Questions about intent. The most valuable line in a DFM report is often a question: what does this surface mate with, is this hole a clearance or a locating feature, does this tolerance come from a calculation or a habit.

A note on what will be hard to inspect. Features that cannot be measured with standard equipment are a source of later disputes. Flagging them early is a mark of a supplier who has thought past the quote.

The common findings

In practice, most cost reductions on machined parts come from a short list:

  • Internal corner radii too small for an efficient cutter
  • Deep pockets with thin walls requiring slow, careful passes
  • Tolerances applied globally rather than to critical features
  • Threads specified deeper than they need to be
  • Surface finish called out on faces that never get seen
  • Features on five faces where a redesign puts them on three

Red flags

A quote with no questions. On any part with real geometry, an engineer who has opened the file will have at least one question.

"No problem, we can make it" on a drawing with a conflict. Drawings with internal contradictions are common. A supplier who does not raise them either has not read it or intends to interpret it their own way.

DFM feedback that only ever suggests loosening tolerances. That is a cost conversation, not an engineering one. Real DFM also tells you where you are under-specified.

How to get more out of it

Send context with the drawing. The assembly it fits into, the load it carries, the environment it works in. A supplier who knows what the part does can suggest changes that a supplier looking at geometry alone cannot.

And say explicitly what you are willing to change. If the outer envelope is fixed by an existing assembly but the internal features are open, saying so focuses the review where it can help.

Die Kurzversion

A DFM review that comes back with a price and no comments has told you nothing. Ask for observations at feature level, and send enough context that the observations can be useful.
